Hark The Herald Angel Sing - part 6
veiled in flesh the Godhead see;
hail th'incarnate Deity,
pleased with man as man to dwell,
Jesus, our Immanuel.
“And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth” John 1:14
The incredible mystery of Christmas is that the creator of the universe stepped down into His creation, taking on the fullness of humanity without compromising His deity. Jesus, who was fully God, became at the same time fully man. He is the perfect mediator, our great High Priest because He knows our weakness and yet is without sin. (Heb 4:15). He is the second Adam as the scriptures say, able to perfectly and effectively obey the whole of God’s righteous standard and then to suffer on our behalf and then overcome death itself.
Jesus is the radiance of the glory of God and the exact imprint of His nature (Heb 1:3). When we see Him we see the father in heaven (John 14:9), the very Godhead revealed to us. Jesus is the ultimate revelation even as He is the ultimate and perfect redeemer. By Christ we can know God, and we can come to Him.
And so we praise the God who took on flesh! Praise Him who came down to rescue his people! Who would call us by name!
If that were not enough, Jesus is all these things and yet “dwelt among us.” Indeed, we see this aspect of God first in the Old Testament with the construction of the Tabernacle. The LORD God pitches His tent among His people! He is pleased to do so! This is not only the momentary truth of Christmas and the birth of Jesus!
Jesus Himself tells His followers He will never leave them or forsake them. His presence is an assurance to them! Still more the eternal state and Kingdom of Christ are marked in this very way: “Behold, the dwelling place of God is with man. He will dwell with them, and they will be His people, and God Himself will be with them as their God” (Rev 21:3).
Jesus is our Immanuel, a name meaning God with us. Connecting to the promises of the child born to us in the prophecies of Isaiah, Jesus is the seal of the promise and the very fulfillment of it!
Jesus wants to dwell in your life, not as seasonal visitor but as a permanent resident! Pray this Advent to receive Him fully into your life! Pray to magnify Christ the Word who became flesh and dwelt among us!
