Hark The Herald Angel Sing - part 5

late in time behold him come,
offspring of the Virgin's womb:

No Jesus wasn’t late for His appointment. He wasn’t procrastinating in heaven thinking he’d get around to it eventually.

The song refers to an idea we find in the book of Galatians. “But when the fullness of time had come, God sent forth His son, born of a woman, born under the law, to redeem those who were under the law, so that we might receive adoption as sons” (Gal 4:4-5)

At the perfect and planned time God sent forth Jesus to be born. Hebrews echoes this same theme as the author talks about the many ways in which God spoke to His people but now He has “spoken to us by His son” (Heb 1:1-2)

All of history had been building to this very point, to prepare the world to receive the son that He might redeem His people. Our minds might chase endless rabbit trails to the unique and perfect time of Christ’s arrival and the subsequent spread of the good news of salvation He accomplished.
And we cannot forget of the miraculous birth of Jesus through the virgin Mary, overshadowed by the power of the Most High. Foretold long before by the prophet Isaiah (Isa. 7:14), announced by the angel Gabriel (Luke 1), and fulfilled by God!

As we celebrate the season of advent we reflect on the birth of Jesus but now experience further joy turning to the expectation of His return. As surely as He came at the right time then, He will return at the right time!

Pray that God would give us hearts of expectation! We should be excited to see Jesus keep His promises in us, in the church, and in the world! We should live knowing the return of Jesus is as real and certain as His birth! How might we be shaped by these truths today? May God give confidence and joy to our steps!
