Hark The Herald Angel Sing - part 1
One of my favorite Christmas hymns is Hark! The Herald Angel Sing, originally written by Charles Wesley as "A Hymn for Christmas Day" it was adapted by George Whitfield and others to become what we know today. This advent I'd like to lead us through a few days (eight to be precise) of meditating on this classic Christmas hymn. Let's dive right in!
Hark! The Herald Angel sing,
“Glory to the newborn King;
Did you hear? I wonder how often we are met with this question in our daily lives. The news cycle and sirens of the internet seem constantly blaring, attempting to overcome one another as they fight for space within our mind. It is hard to focus on anything. It takes decision and effort (sometimes a great deal!) to listen. Work and Errands and Family and Challenges. Checklists and Checkbooks and Checkmarks. Clicks and Likes, Scandals and Un-coverups. Even if the clouds were pulled back and we were surrounded by Angelic anthems we can almost imagine how we’d miss it.
Hark! This call means ‘listen’! ‘Hey!’ ‘Over here!’ ‘Pay attention!’ ‘Don’t miss this!’ The hymn has held strong as a Christmas classic, and it calls us each time to halt our sprinting minds and turn our attention to Christ.
Pause.
Listen.
The Angels sing, “Glory to the newborn King.’ Glory to Christ the King of Kings! The chorus rings forth in the heavens! It resounds throughout history! Have you heard it? Have you pondered it this Advent season? The significance of the birth of Jesus and His entry into flesh that He might redeem the world!
Pray this season, take the time of this advent, to quiet yourself and listen. Slow down and turn your attention to Christ!
